Musing Mondays: Buying New Authors

Musing Mondays is sponsored by Rebecca.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about new authors…
What is your policy when it comes to new authors? Do you feel comfortable purchasing a book or do you prefer to borrow new authors from the library? How often do you 'try out' a new author?

I definitely feel comfortable buying books from new authors. I'm not really one of those people who finds an author and reads EVERYTHING that they've written, so I'm constantly on the lookout for new authors. I usually only buy regular priced books if I've heard good things about them though, so that helps keep me from buying not-so-great books. For bargain priced or buy-one-get-one sale books, I'll get just about anything with good cover art and/or a good sounding blurb on the back. And, at the library book sale each month, I even just pick up books that look like they are in like-new condition. I figure it's only a quarter for a paperback and a dollar for hardcover so I can always just throw in on PaperBackSwap if I don't like it!

  1. Yes, that is one of the dangers of those library sales...I mean, if a book is that cheap, and looks interesting, how can one say no?:-)

  2. I find sales in libraries , on line or in stores impossible to resist.

  3. My response was pretty similar to yours -- except I will read a favorite author's whole oeuvre -- unless they "jump the shark" halfway through.

  4. I am cautious about purchasing books by new authors. I try to preview books, new author or not, by checking them out from the library. But, you are right, I am much more likely to throw caution to the wind and buy a book when I am at the used bookstore and the book is a bargain.

  5. Wow, I think you're the first blogger my age I "meet" :-)
I like how you get books by new authors.
Bargain books are heaven and hell in one, I think. All those books and you have to make up your mind. With bargains I've gotten the most not so good books, I think...

Maybe I should get rid of the bad choices I made by giveaways? Paperbackswap doesn't work for me and Bookcrossing turned out to be - not so good for me.
